Brenau University

On Feb 19, there was an announcement about the use of Internet radio services on campus computers so I though I would clarify some of the more technical points here for folks that may have questions.

What is Internet Radio?
When we refer to Internet radio, we are referring to sites and applications that "stream" audio to your computer such as radio stations. iTunes also includes a "Radio" option that will allow you to listen to music streams over the Internet. More often than not, people tend to leave these applications running even when they are not near the computer. This represents a significant waste of resources - one that can easily be averted by simply purchasing an inexpensive AM/FM radio.

What about my downloaded iTunes music? Does that count?
No - we are not talking about music you have downloaded to your iTunes or other digital music device. Those files are downloaded only once and after that no bandwidth is used. Your iPod is safe (grin). When we say "iTunes Radio" we are only referring to the "Radio" link that appears on the top-left menu of iTunes.

Does that apply to my home computer?
No - the policy only refers to computers that are directly connected to the University's network. This includes all the desktop and laptop computers owned by the university as well as any computers in the student dorms (that make use of university bandwidth).

Why are you doing this?
The policy concerning network usage is not new. We are only raising awareness of the Internet Radio issue due to the extreme effects this is having on our network performance. I think we'd all prefer the bandwidth be used for more productive and educational purposes. Our goal is to make every dollar count and to ensure your tuition dollars are going to further the mission of the university.

Please feel free to let me know if you have further questions or concerns.
